SECOND INTERREGIONAL WORKSHOP ON THE FIGHT AGAINST THE FINANCING OF VIOLENT EXTREMISM IN THE SAHEL AND IN THE HORN OF AFRICA

The second interregional workshop on combating the financing of violent extremism in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa took place in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, from 16 to 18 May 2017. The workshop, organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), followed a first meeting on the same theme held from 7 to 9 February 2017 in Dakar, Senegal.
These proceedings involved the participation of two NAFI officials from Cameroon, those of representatives of the Financial Intelligence Units, civil society organisations, police and gendarmerie services from Cameroon, Chad, France, Djibouti, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Tanzania, Benin, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal.
The purpose of the meeting was to examine in depth the financing models of violent extremism identified, as well as the means of detecting and combating violent extremism, but also to present the various experiences of civil society organisations in this field.
Presentations were therefore made on the experiences of the Diaspora (France), the African Centre for Peace and Conflict Research (Tanzania), the Women's Platform of the G5 Sahel (Burkina Faso).
The meeting then focused on the implementation of a strategy to combat violent extremism and radicalism, which includes functional analysis, audit, conclusions, and use of the SWOT method (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat).
