WORKSHOP ON THE FIGHT AGAINST THE FINANCING OF VIOLENT EXTREMISM IN THE SAHEL AND THE HORN OF AFRICA
From 7 to 9 February 2017, a training workshop on combating the financing of violent extremism in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa was held in Dakar, Senegal.
This workshop, organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) with the support of the United States Government, was attended by two NAFI officials and representatives of the Financial Intelligence Units, police and the Gendarmerie services of Chad, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Benin, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal.
The objectives of the workshop were to share experiences on violent extremism and to collect information on sources of funding of this phenomenon. Each delegation thus made a presentation on the trends of violent extremism in its country.

The topics discussed during the meeting included the following points:
- Overview of trends at the international, regional and national levels in combating violent extremism leading to terrorism;
- Preventing and combating the spread of violent extremism among young people and women: Activities and experience of the Nouakchott Regional Unit for the Prevention of Radicalization;
- Addressing the challenges of violent extremism by hindering its sources of funding;
- Link between transnational organised crime and violent extremism/terrorism;
- Case study: Stockholm attack in Sweden.
